The Other Inhabitants

Cover of the series The Other Inhabitants

A bird races a plane on a runway, and doesn’t know it’s a race. Seven chapters told in the first person by the animals who share the planet with us: the bird, the horse, the cow, the wolf and the dog, the rat, and finally the sea.

  1. I Am Not Your BirdIt started at an airport. I was late, running to catch a bird — a plane, I mean. Then, on the runway, a real bird flew beside us as we accelerated, and for ten seconds I turned it into a race. Except there was never a race. The bird didn't know. The race existed in one place only: my head. That's where this series begins — each chapter hands the microphone to one animal, and the first one just took it.6 min read1/7
  2. I Am the BirdThe bird who seized the microphone in the preface now takes us with him: the meeting nobody called, the road built fresh every morning by the sun, the cousins who take the sky for a bed — and the elders who no longer cross. “You have a word for what happens now. Migration. It is a strange word for what this is. We are not starting anything. We are continuing to live.”10 min read2/7
  3. I Am the HorseA horse is built to notice danger before it arrives. Eyes holding almost the whole horizon. Ears turning independently. A body designed to leave quickly. And then we climbed onto the one place predators attack: its back. But when we needed a word for the strength of those machines, we kept the horse. Horsepower. I keep coming back to that.12 min read3/7
  4. I Am the CowThe bird gave us air. The horse gave us attention. The cow gives us something slower and harder to hold: sufficiency — and, underneath it, a set of quiet absences she never once names as wrong. “Nothing is about to happen. That is the part they never believe.”12 min read4/7
  5. I Am the Wolf and the DogTonight, one animal is heard but never seen. Another is seen but never heard. A bird sits between them, trying to sleep. Two animals who were once one animal. Neither knows the other is there.9 min read5/7
  6. I Am the RatHe isn't asking to be liked. He isn't even asking to be forgiven. He would just like the story to be accurate. You would call this a small life. From inside it, it is extremely detailed. A night behind the wall, seen from the other side.15 min read6/7
  7. The LandingSix chapters ago, a bird saw a man leaving on a plane and said: Come with me. Months later, the bird reaches the sea. He has spent the journey asking the other inhabitants who they are. At the water’s edge, he discovers an entire world he cannot enter — a world of fish, whales, dolphins, fishermen, songs, migrations, machines, and lives too small to see. The sea looks almost empty. That is one of its tricks.32 min read7/7
